“Be ready for a Russian cyberattack,” the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (CCCS) tells Canadian businesses and those responsible for Canada’s critical infrastructure. Reporting that these cyber threat activities are messages to prepare and be vigilant in the coming year.
Last week’s warning comes as Russia deploys more military along the Ukraine border.
This build-up has drawn the attention of the international community, particularly the US and Canada. With non-violent threats of imposing economic sanctions on Russia in the event of an attack on Ukraine.
The Centre expects Russia to turn to hacking operations in response to attacks
CCCS is correct in its warning. The potential to disrupt or shut down infrastructure became clearer in 2020, when alleged Russian hackers attacked SolarWinds. A major US information technology firm with reportedly over 33,000 customers, the likes of the US Government. This included the Department of Homeland Security and Treasury Department.
Once inside Solar Wind’s network, when Solar Wind sends out updated information to its customers, it will also send out the hacker’s code.
CCCS suggests Canadian companies prepare to isolate critical infrastructure components against attacks. Also, services from the internet and corporate/internal networks if those components are attractive to a hostile threat actor to disrupt.
The Centre moreover recommends increasing organisational vigilance, focusing sharply on TTPs, ensuring that cybersecurity and IT personnel identify and assess any unexpected or unusual network behaviour.
Further, CSSC advises patching your systems to enhance security posture, focusing on the vulnerabilities, enabling logging, backup, and multi-factor authentication to protect the brute force and spear-phishing attempts.
